Wind, what wind? - Paddling the Elkhorn Slough

One of the few places in the Bay Area that is a must do for kayakers is Elkhorn Slough. It also helps that Monterey Bay Kayaks (kayak rental) has a store in the mouth of the slough. Since I already had a kayak, I was ready for this...

Being there the first time, I had to jump at the chance of going. It was a perfect day. Normally there's a head wind paddling back to the mouth of the slough, but as the title says, "Wind, what wind?"

Seven adventurers enter through the mouth of the slough (Brooke, Carolyn, Eric, John, Kathy, Nancy, and me).

Sirens wail, warning us to beware of the slough and to go back.

There was a slight head wind paddling into the slough. So I raised my sail.

Almost 3mph.

I think the seals were more curious of me than I of them.

I had a captive audience sailing by.

A train passing through?


I remember afterwards that train tracks ran through Kirby Park (another Elkhorn Slough put-in).

This is one of the not so normal days at the slough. No 40 knot head winds coming back, great weather, and great company!
