Free Parking, Free Rides, Oh My! (McInnis to China Camp)

Postby Seek » Sun Jul 28, 2013 8:43 pm

Meetup 7/21/2013 was going to be another paddle from China Camp to McInnis Park. We did this in 2012, so why not again?

That is until John suggested that we go in the reverse direction because we were bucking a good wind going back to China Camp in 2012. I thought to myself, "why didn't I think of that!"

After all was said and done, we had two paddles one weekend after another. The 7/21/13 paddle was kept the same while the 7/28/13 (due to better tide conditions) paddle went in the reverse direction. After receiving reports of the 7/21/13 being very similar to the one back in 2012, I was looking forward to the 7/28/13 paddle in reverse direction.

We were all in the water by 10:30am.

Tide was moving out to the bay so we got a free ride out.

We were out to the mouth in no time. We had to follow the markers due to the low tide.

Craig, Randel, John, and Liz behind my ugly mug.

It was getting close to 11:00am and the wind became to pick up.

We had a little meeting about which direction to head towards. By this time the waters were getting choppy.

And choppy it did. I continued heading in a straight line. With my my GPS set to mph, I could only get up to 1.2mph. Every time I stopped paddling to fix my hat or glasses, my speed would drop down to zero instantly. I continued doing this for 15 minutes until I got tired of it and headed to shore.

While heading to the shoreline, I saw Craig doing some reconnaissance? :idunno:

Paddling the shoreline at speeds of 2.5mph was easy. I was at China Camp in no time. :whew:

I knew better than to paddle against the wind with my boat. I should've learn this from the 2012 China Camp return.

Planning to be in the water by 1:30pm.

Choppy waters, but at least the wind is in the right direction; at our backs.

My GPS speed reading without paddling.

With the wind at our backs and on my slow boat, I could get up to 5mph paddling. I was all grins going back to McInnis.

John was right about reversing the direction. :notworthy: It made paddling the China Camp shoreline so much more enjoyable!

Some good reasons:
  1. McInnis is right off the 101 freeway.
  2. Parking is free. We all had easy access to the put-in even though the park was full of activities.
  3. We paddled back with the wind to our backs.
The map of breadcrumbs.

We did ride the tide out and in, but that is possible even in the China Camp to McInnis direction. The one thing I would change is to leave earlier. I was looking at the my tide chart and we could have left McInnis as early as 8:00am to ride the tide out. My guess is the wind starts to pick up around 10-11am as the area starts to warm up. Of course this is weather dependent.

Overall, a very enjoyable paddle the opposite direction (McInnis to China Camp).
